Cameras should protect your place without filming more of your neighbours than they need to. We aim each one at your doors, driveway, yard or shopfront, and talk you through the Privacy Commissioner's guidance on telling people they are being recorded. For businesses we can add signage and set recording to suit your hours.

Security cameras on the exposed coast from Hataitai to Seatoun

The eastern and southern suburbs mix two kinds of ground: exposed coast and sheltered flat. Lyall Bay, Island Bay and Seatoun face Cook Strait, where salt spray and southerly gales are part of normal life. On those homes we choose cameras with weather-rated housings, use stainless or coated brackets and seal every cable joint, because a corroded connector will sooner or later knock a camera offline. Seatoun's exposed promontory near the harbour entrance is another spot where we favour metal housings and short, sheltered cable runs.

Miramar and Kilbirnie sit mostly on flat land, the old lagoon basin and the Rongotai isthmus, so houses there are generally simpler to cable, and cameras can go low enough to capture faces at the door. Kilbirnie also has apartment buildings near the business centre and the airport, where body corporate approval comes first before anything is fixed to shared walls. Blown sand is a nuisance near the Lyall Bay beachfront, where the eastern streets were built on levelled dunes, so lenses there may need wiping more often than inland.

Hataitai is different again, spread across the flank of Mount Victoria with homes stepped up steep sections. There the garage can be at street level with the house well above it, so we cover both with separate cameras and run cable up through the subfloor or inside protected conduit. Around Miramar's studios and post-production businesses we also install commercial systems that watch gates, car parks and entrances after hours.

Local tip: On a south coast house, rinse the camera lenses and housings with fresh water now and then, because salt film blurs night footage.

CCTV Installation in Eastern and Southern Suburbs: Local Conditions

The eastern and southern suburbs face strong southerlies and salt spray along Lyall Bay, Island Bay and Seatoun, so we use camera housings and mounts suited to the outdoors and fix them firmly to stop the picture shaking in a gale. Flat sections in Miramar and Kilbirnie are often simpler to cable.

Homes in Eastern and Southern Suburbs

Housing here is mostly early 20th century. Hataitai was subdivided from 1901 and built up into the 1950s, many Island Bay houses and shops date from the 1920s, and Seatoun grew after its tunnel and tram opened in 1907. Kilbirnie is mostly single-storey homes, with a few apartment buildings near the shops and the airport, and Miramar is home to New Zealand's first state house, opened in 1937. Houses of these ages may still have rubber-insulated cable or early fuse boards in places, especially where earlier renovations added circuits without replacing the old ones. Current wiring rules require RCD protection on new and altered circuits, so a renovation is a good time to bring the board up to date.

CCTV Installation Eastern and Southern Suburbs FAQs

Will a camera on my Island Bay house survive the salt and southerlies?

Yes, if it is rated for outdoor use, mounted on a solid bracket and has sealed connections. We choose housings and fixings for coastal exposure and mount cameras under the eaves where possible.

Can I watch my cameras on my phone?

Yes. We set up the recorder and app so you can see live and recorded footage from anywhere with a data connection.

Can cameras go on a body corporate building in Eastern and Southern Suburbs?

Only with the body corporate's approval if they are on common property. A doorbell camera or indoor camera at your own unit is often simpler.
