Older homes rarely have enough sockets, and the ones they have are often in the wrong places. An older villa or early state house may have a single socket in a room and nothing near the bed. The result is power boards chained behind the TV and leads across the floor. A few well placed outlets is one of the cheapest electrical jobs there is.

We fit extra double sockets, USB outlets, weatherproof outdoor points and dedicated circuits for heat pumps, spa pools and workshops. Small jobs can usually be priced from a few photos, so you know the cost before we arrive.

Power Points by Cheeky's Electrical in Wellington

What we install

The most common request is an extra double socket next to an existing one, or a new outlet on a wall with none. We also fit USB and USB-C outlets for bedsides and benches, switched outlets for appliances inside cupboards, and floor or bench outlets for kitchen islands and home offices.

WorkSafe recommends shuttered or recessed sockets for new installations and upgrades, especially where small children can reach them. We fit shuttered sockets as standard.

  • Extra double and quad sockets
  • USB and USB-C outlets
  • Weatherproof outdoor outlets
  • Dedicated circuits for heat pumps, spa pools and workshops
  • Moving sockets for renovations and wall-mounted TVs

Outdoor sockets that survive Wellington weather

An outside socket saves dragging a lead through a window for the water blaster, the lawnmower or a set of deck lights. In Wellington the outlet has to cope with more than rain. Wind drives water up and under covers, so we choose a weatherproof outlet rated for the spot, mount it away from direct exposure where we can, and keep the cover facing down. WorkSafe's advice for electricity outdoors is to always use an RCD, and every outdoor point we fit has one.

Salt matters on the coast. BRANZ classes land within about 500 m of the sea, including the harbour, as a high corrosion zone, and that is likely to include much of the harbourside and south coast housing in places such as Lyall Bay, Island Bay, Seatoun, Eastbourne, Petone, Tītahi Bay and the Kāpiti beachfront. BRANZ Maps confirms the zone for each address. In those spots we use fittings and fixings suited to salt air. If you are planning outdoor lighting as well, running both together saves a second trench.

How It Works

Send photos or book a visit
Fixed price per point, agreed before we start
Cable routed through ceiling, subfloor or wall with minimal disturbance
Outlet fitted, tested and RCD protection checked
Certificate of Compliance issued

Dedicated circuits for heavier loads

Some appliances should not share a circuit. Heat pumps, spa pools, workshop machines, chest freezers and EV chargers draw enough current, or run long enough, that a dedicated circuit back to the board is the safe way to feed them.

Before quoting we check that your switchboard has space and suitable RCD protection for the new circuit. If it does not, we explain the options. An EV charger needs its own final circuit with specific RCD protection, covered on our EV charger installation page.

Can I install a power point myself?

The Electricity (Safety) Regulations let a homeowner who owns and lives in the house replace an existing socket like for like, and relocate existing sockets wired in TPS cable, provided the work does not involve the switchboard and follows the homeowner code of practice. New circuits can only be connected after a licensed electrical inspector has tested them.

WorkSafe says you must own and live in the property to use these rules, so landlords cannot rely on them for rentals. If the cable behind the faceplate is old rubber, or you are unsure, leave it to a licensed electrician.

Your Certificate of Compliance

WorkSafe says electricians must issue a Certificate of Compliance for fixed wiring work, including new power points. Swapping an existing socket for a new one is maintenance and does not need one.

The CoC shows the work was done by a licensed electrician, meets the legal safety standards and was tested. Keep it with your house papers for insurance and for when you sell.

Getting a price from photos

For most socket jobs three photos are enough: the wall where you want the new outlet, the nearest existing socket, and your switchboard. Tell us what is on the other side of the wall and whether the house has a subfloor you can get under, which is the case in many older Wellington homes, or sits on a concrete slab.

We reply with a fixed price. If we find something on the day that changes the job, such as old wiring that is unsafe to extend, we stop and talk to you first. You can also book online and we will quote on site, anywhere from Porirua to the eastern suburbs.

Power Points FAQs

Can you add a socket without cutting into the wall?

Usually. We feed cable from the ceiling space or subfloor. On a slab or concrete wall we may use a neat surface-mounted channel.

Will an outdoor socket last near the sea?

It will last much longer if it is rated for the position. Within about 500 m of the sea or harbour we use fittings and fixings suited to salt air.

Do outdoor power points need RCD protection?

Yes. Every outdoor outlet we install is RCD protected and weatherproof for its spot.

Are USB power points worth it?

For bedsides, desks and kitchen benches they free up sockets and reduce the pile of chargers. We fit models with both USB and standard outlets.

Do I get a certificate for a new power point?

Yes. A new power point is fixed wiring and comes with a Certificate of Compliance. Replacing an old socket like for like does not need one.

Can you wire a heat pump?

Yes. We connect heat pumps on a suitable circuit with an isolating switch and issue a Certificate of Compliance.
