The western and northern suburbs sit on high ground at the edge of an upthrust block beside the Wellington Fault, and their housing followed the tunnels, trams and trains. Karori grew after its tunnel opened in 1900 and was one of New Zealand's biggest suburbs by the 1960s. Ngaio and Khandallah filled in along the railway, Johnsonville gained 329 state houses between 1938 and 1956, Tawa was subdivided after 1945, and Churton Park has been built on former farmland since the 1970s.

That spread of ages means very different jobs from one suburb to the next. Older homes in Karori, Ngaio and Khandallah often need rewiring or a switchboard upgrade, while the newer streets of Churton Park and the infill homes in Tawa are usually simpler for an EV charger installation once board capacity is checked. Whatever the house, we test first and give you a written, fixed price.

Common Home Types in Western and Northern Suburbs

Karori and Khandallah mix early 20th century villas and bungalows with mid-century homes and, since the 1980s, infill houses on subdivided sections. Ngaio has everything from 1860s colonial buildings to the 1928 Tarikaka railway cottages and 1960s weatherboard homes. Johnsonville and Tawa have large numbers of state houses from the late 1930s to the early 1960s, some on their second or third switchboard and some still on their first. Churton Park, built from the 1970s, is the youngest of the group and is generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable, though boards from the 1970s and 1980s often lack RCD protection on some circuits. Infill homes in Tawa and Karori usually have modern boards, which makes adding circuits straightforward when there is spare capacity.

What Western and Northern Suburbs Conditions Mean for Your Wiring

These suburbs are hilly and exposed. Mt Kaukau rises to 445 metres above Khandallah, and steep sections are normal in Karori, Ngaio and Churton Park, where extensive cut and fill earthworks formed the subdivisions. GeoNet linked many of Wellington's 2022 slips to saturated soil and older cut and fill ground, so we keep cable trenches and outdoor circuits away from unstable banks and plan routes to garages and sleepouts on site. In July 2017 a large landslide closed Ngaio Gorge Road, a reminder that slips can take outdoor wiring with them. Wind is the other constant, so outdoor and security lighting on exposed ridges needs firm fixings and weatherproof fittings. Wellington Electricity runs the lines network across all six suburbs.

Electrician Western and Northern Suburbs FAQs

Does my Johnsonville state house need a new switchboard?

Not automatically. Many original boards still work, but a board from the 1940s or 1950s often has rewireable fuses, no spare space and no RCD protection. We test it and tell you honestly whether it can take what you want to add or needs replacing.

Can you install an EV charger in a Churton Park garage?

Usually, yes. WorkSafe guidance calls for a dedicated circuit protected by a Type B RCD, or a Type A RCD with an RDC-DD, from a MEN switchboard. We check board space and capacity first and tell you if anything needs upgrading.

Can you run power to a sleepout on a steep Karori section?

Yes. We walk the route with you, keep the cable clear of banks and retaining walls, size it for the distance and protect the circuit with an RCD. You receive a Certificate of Compliance for the work.

Do I need a Certificate of Compliance for new lights?

If new fixed wiring is installed, yes. Simply swapping an existing light fitting is maintenance and does not need one. Keep every CoC with your house records, because insurers and buyers may ask for it.
