Induction is a common upgrade, but plenty of older kitchens in Western and Northern Suburbs were wired for a smaller range. Before connecting a new hob we compare the manufacturer's requirements with your existing circuit and switchboard. If the cable or protection falls short, we say so and price the upgrade before anything is fitted.

Cooking circuits in the western and northern hill suburbs

In Karori, Ngaio, Khandallah, Johnsonville, Churton Park and Tawa, the challenge with a new oven or induction hob is usually distance rather than the kitchen itself. Many houses have their switchboard in a garage or below the main floor, and a new dedicated circuit means a cable route through subfloor or framing that can be longer than it looks from the street. We walk that route before quoting.

The age of the board changes from one suburb to the next. Karori's early 20th century villas may still carry rubber-insulated cable that should not be reused for a 32 amp cooktop, while its infill homes from the 1980s onwards usually have a modern board with room for an extra breaker. Johnsonville and Tawa have big runs of state houses from the late 1930s to the early 1960s, some still on their first board with rewireable fuses, where a switchboard upgrade may come before the cooktop. Churton Park homes from the 1970s have plastic-sheathed cable in decent condition, but boards that are now about 50 years old often lack RCD protection, and any new circuit we add has to have it.

Ngaio's 1928 Tarikaka railway cottages and Khandallah's extended bungalows sit in the middle: kitchens that have been modernised, circuits that may not have been. All six suburbs are within Powerco's gas network, so gas hobs do come out here, and we fit our circuit work around the gasfitter's visit.

Local tip: If your board is in the garage under the house, a photo showing both the board and the wall it sits on helps us estimate the cable route up to the kitchen.

Oven and Cooktop Installation in Western and Northern Suburbs: Local Conditions

Western and northern suburbs homes from the 1920s to the 1980s often have the switchboard in a garage or under the house, well away from the kitchen. A new circuit there can mean a long run through the subfloor, which we plan and price on the visit.

Homes in Western and Northern Suburbs

Karori and Khandallah mix early 20th century villas and bungalows with mid-century homes and, since the 1980s, infill houses on subdivided sections. Ngaio has everything from 1860s colonial buildings to the 1928 Tarikaka railway cottages and 1960s weatherboard homes. Johnsonville and Tawa have large numbers of state houses from the late 1930s to the early 1960s, some on their second or third switchboard and some still on their first. Churton Park, built from the 1970s, is the youngest of the group and is generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable, though boards from the 1970s and 1980s often lack RCD protection on some circuits. Infill homes in Tawa and Karori usually have modern boards, which makes adding circuits straightforward when there is spare capacity.

Oven and Cooktop Installation Western and Northern Suburbs FAQs

My Tawa state house still has rewireable fuses. Can I add an induction cooktop?

Usually not on the old board as it stands. A new cooktop circuit needs a breaker and RCD protection, so we price a switchboard upgrade alongside the new cable and give you both figures before you commit.

Can a freestanding range be split into a wall oven and cooktop?

Yes. That usually means rearranging the circuit to feed two appliances, which we plan and price first.

Can you remove the old appliance?

We disconnect it safely. Tell us when booking if you also need it taken away.
