Central Wellington holds some of the oldest housing in the country. Mt Victoria is mainly 19th-century wooden villas and cottages, much of Newtown dates from the 1890s tram boom, and Thorndon's villas line Tinakori Road and Hobson Street. Kelburn and Brooklyn climbed the hills once the cable car and trams arrived, while Te Aro has filled with apartments since the early 2000s, many of them converted from former office buildings.

In houses this old the wiring has usually been changed more than once, so one home can hold several generations of cable and fittings. Before we extend anything, we test what is there and tell you whether a partial or full rewiring makes sense, or whether a switchboard upgrade is enough. In apartment buildings, jobs such as an EV charger installation in a shared car park go through the body corporate. Either way you get a written, fixed price before work starts.

Common Home Types in Central Wellington

Mt Victoria, Newtown and Thorndon are the heart of the city's pre-1930 character housing: timber villas and cottages on narrow lots with painted weatherboards, corrugated iron roofs and tight side yards. Many were renovated from the 1970s and show repeated additions, so a single house can carry old rubber-insulated cable in one room and modern plastic-sheathed cable in the next. Rubber-insulated wiring should be replaced, not extended. Most older houses here have a subfloor and ceiling space we can get into, which makes rewiring possible with little damage to linings. Te Aro's apartments, including converted offices and rooftop additions, share services and common property, so most work needs body corporate sign-off. If your house is in a character precinct under the Wellington City District Plan, check before changing anything on the street front, such as exterior lights or the meter box.

What Central Wellington Conditions Mean for Your Wiring

Wellington is the windiest city in the world by average wind speed, and the hill suburbs feel it most. Kelburn recorded a 198 km/h gust in the Wahine storm of 1968, and the Brooklyn wind turbine sits on Polhill because of those winds. Outdoor lights, sensor lights and external sockets need firm fixings and weatherproof ratings to cope with wind-driven rain. On the slopes of Kelburn, Brooklyn and Mt Victoria the house is often well above or below the street, so a cable to a garage or car deck can be a long, steep run that has to stay clear of banks. The scarp of the Wellington Fault is visible near Thorndon, and in a city with many active faults it makes sense to secure heavy items near the switchboard. Wellington Electricity runs the local lines network: if the whole street is out it is a network fault, but if only your house or one circuit is down, call us.

Electrician Central Wellington FAQs

Does my Mt Victoria or Newtown villa need a full rewire?

Not always. Some villas have already been rewired and others only in part. We check for rubber-insulated cable, rewireable fuses and missing RCD protection, then tell you whether a partial rewire, a full rewire or just a new switchboard is the right call.

Can I get an EV charger in a Te Aro apartment building?

Often, but apartment car parks are usually common property, so the body corporate has to approve the work and agree where the supply comes from. WorkSafe guidance calls for a dedicated circuit with the right RCD protection. We can assess the supply and give the body corporate a written scope.

My street has power but my house does not. Who do I call?

Check your switchboard first for a tripped RCD or breaker. If the whole street is out, that is a network fault on the Wellington Electricity lines, and your power retailer can tell you more. If it is only your house or one circuit, call us and we will trace the fault.

Is a new switchboard inspected once it is installed?

Yes. Replacing a main switchboard is high-risk electrical work, so a licensed electrical inspector checks it before it is livened. You get a Certificate of Compliance and a record of inspection to keep with your house papers.
