In Wellington the roof and the wind matter as much as the panels. Before quoting in Central Wellington we check the roofing, fixings and framing, and the mounting system is specified for the site's wind exposure, with every roof penetration sealed. If the roof is near the end of its life, it is cheaper to replace it before the panels go on than after.

Solar on Central Wellington's iron roofs and hillside sections

Much of Central Wellington's housing is villas and cottages under corrugated iron: Thorndon along Tinakori Road and Hobson Street, Mt Victoria on the slopes of its hill, and Newtown on flatter ground to the south. Iron takes solar mounting well, but many of these roofs have been patched and re-fixed over the years, so we check the sheets, fixings and framing before an array goes on. A worn-out roof is best replaced first.

Shade is the bigger question here. Mt Victoria's houses sit on the north-western slopes of the hill, and in hollows like Brougham Street they are lower and closer to their neighbours, while Thorndon backs onto steep Te Ahumairangi Hill. A roof that looks sunny at midday can lose hours of winter sun to the slope or the house next door, so we look at the sun path across the year before suggesting where panels go.

Character controls may also apply. Newtown is one of the city's pre-1930 character areas, and parts of the city sit in character precincts under the 2024 District Plan, so check with Wellington City Council whether your house is covered before committing to panels on a street-facing roof. Te Aro apartments are a separate case: the roof is common property, so solar becomes a body corporate project rather than an individual one. Kelburn, higher up and among mature trees, needs the same careful shade check before anything is ordered.

Local tip: If your Mt Victoria or Thorndon roof faces the street, ask the council about character precinct rules before you settle on a panel layout.

Solar Panels in Central Wellington: Local Conditions

Central Wellington villas and cottages often have corrugated iron roofs that take panels well, but tight hillside sections in Thorndon, Mt Victoria and Brooklyn can be shaded by the hill or the house next door. We map shading through the day before deciding where panels go.

Homes in Central Wellington

Mt Victoria, Newtown and Thorndon are the heart of the city's pre-1930 character housing: timber villas and cottages on narrow lots with painted weatherboards, corrugated iron roofs and tight side yards. Many were renovated from the 1970s and show repeated additions, so a single house can carry old rubber-insulated cable in one room and modern plastic-sheathed cable in the next. Rubber-insulated wiring should be replaced, not extended. Most older houses here have a subfloor and ceiling space we can get into, which makes rewiring possible with little damage to linings. Te Aro's apartments, including converted offices and rooftop additions, share services and common property, so most work needs body corporate sign-off. If your house is in a character precinct under the Wellington City District Plan, check before changing anything on the street front, such as exterior lights or the meter box.

Solar Panels Central Wellington FAQs

Can I put solar panels on a character villa in Newtown?

Often, yes, but check first whether your house is in a character area or precinct under the District Plan, as that can affect work on street-facing roofs. We can place panels on rear roof planes where the sun allows.

Do I need a battery?

Not always. A battery lets you use stored solar power in the evening, but it adds cost. We can install a battery-ready system so one can be added later.

Will panels stay on in a Wellington gale?

They are fixed with a mounting system specified for the site's wind exposure and fastened into the roof structure. We check the roof framing and fixings before quoting.
