Batteries store daytime solar for the evening, when most homes use the most power. They add cost, but in the Wellington Electricity area they also help with flexible export limits, because using or storing more of your own power means less is pushed onto a congested network. We explain whether a battery is worth it for you, or design a battery-ready system so one can be added later.

Panels built for the south coast: solar from Hataitai to Island Bay

The eastern and southern suburbs take Wellington's weather head on. Wellington Airport, on the Rongotai isthmus between Kilbirnie and Miramar, records gusts over 63 km/h on 166 days a year, according to NIWA. On coastal homes in Lyall Bay, Island Bay and Seatoun, rails, clamps and fixings are chosen for that exposure and screwed into the roof framing at the spacing the mounting system's design calls for. In the Wahine storm of April 1968 the airport recorded a gust of 187 km/h, and Seatoun's homes sit on the exposed promontory where that ferry went down.

Salt is the other factor. Homes within 500 m of the sea, harbours included, are likely to fall in a high corrosion zone under NZS 3604, which affects the grade of fixings and the warranty conditions on panels and rails. We check your address on BRANZ Maps rather than guessing, and panels near the beach benefit from an occasional rinse to clear salt build-up.

Inland the picture is gentler. Miramar and Kilbirnie sit on flat ground, so roof access is easier and shading usually comes from neighbouring buildings rather than the land itself. Hataitai is the exception, spread over the south-eastern flank of Mount Victoria, where the hill can cut afternoon and winter sun from roofs on the lower slopes. Wellington Electricity approves connections in all of these suburbs, and we lodge the application before installation.

Local tip: If you live within a few streets of Lyall Bay or Island Bay, look up your address on BRANZ Maps to see its corrosion zone before you compare quotes.

Solar Panels in Eastern and Southern Suburbs: Local Conditions

Homes in the eastern and southern suburbs face the full force of Cook Strait southerlies, and many coastal streets are within reach of salt spray. We choose mounting hardware and fixings for that exposure, and the flat Miramar basin often gives simpler roof access than the hills around it.

Homes in Eastern and Southern Suburbs

Housing here is mostly early 20th century. Hataitai was subdivided from 1901 and built up into the 1950s, many Island Bay houses and shops date from the 1920s, and Seatoun grew after its tunnel and tram opened in 1907. Kilbirnie is mostly single-storey homes, with a few apartment buildings near the shops and the airport, and Miramar is home to New Zealand's first state house, opened in 1937. Houses of these ages may still have rubber-insulated cable or early fuse boards in places, especially where earlier renovations added circuits without replacing the old ones. Current wiring rules require RCD protection on new and altered circuits, so a renovation is a good time to bring the board up to date.

Solar Panels Eastern and Southern Suburbs FAQs

Does living near Lyall Bay change which solar mounting I need?

It can. Homes close to the sea are likely to be in a higher corrosion zone and face strong southerlies, so we specify rails, clamps and fixings for salt and wind exposure and check the panel maker's coastal warranty terms.

Will panels stay on in a Wellington gale?

They are fixed with a mounting system specified for the site's wind exposure and fastened into the roof structure. We check the roof framing and fixings before quoting.

Do you install solar in Eastern and Southern Suburbs?

Yes. We cover Eastern and Southern Suburbs and the rest of the Wellington region, with a written, fixed price before anything is ordered.
