A solar system has three parts: the panels, an inverter that converts their output for your home, and the connection to your switchboard and the network. The lines company has to approve the system before it connects. Wellington Electricity looks after Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, Electra looks after the Kāpiti Coast, and we prepare and lodge the application with whichever one serves your the Hutt Valley address.

Hutt Valley solar: open valley roofs, sheltered basins and harbour edges

The Hutt Valley floor is broad and flat, especially in Upper Hutt, where the plain widens to about 2.5 km between the Remutaka and Akatarawa Ranges. Homes on the flat in Upper Hutt and central Lower Hutt often have unobstructed roofs. Many of Upper Hutt's houses come from subdivisions of the 1950s to the 1980s, so the roofing and the switchboard are worth checking before a system goes on.

Wainuiomata and Stokes Valley are basins surrounded by hills. In Wainuiomata those hills also cut the wind, but in both suburbs the slopes and bush can shade roofs early and late in the day, particularly in winter. Eastbourne's homes sit under bush-covered hills and look west across the harbour, which tends to favour afternoon sun over morning sun, and their position by the water means fixings need to suit salt air. Naenae reaches up the lower slopes of the Eastern Hills from the edge of the flood plain, so some homes there face the same early shade.

Rainfall varies across the valley too. NIWA records about 1,268 mm a year at Wallaceville in Upper Hutt and 1,800 mm at the Wainuiomata Reservoir, against 957 mm at Wellington Airport. Heavy rain tests every roof penetration, so each bracket is sealed with care. Wellington Electricity approves Hutt connections and, since 11 May 2026, may ask owners to cut export when parts of the network are congested, which is one reason to look at a battery.

Local tip: In Stokes Valley or Wainuiomata, notice when the sun drops behind the hills on a winter afternoon, as that tells us a lot about likely output.

Solar Panels in the Hutt Valley: Local Conditions

Flat valley-floor homes in Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt usually get open sky, while Stokes Valley and Eastbourne sit under hills and bush that cut sun at the edges of the day. Wellington Electricity approves Hutt Valley connections, and we lodge the application for you.

Homes in the Hutt Valley

State houses from the 1940s and 1950s make up a large share of Lower Hutt, Naenae and parts of Petone, and many Naenae homes were put up in a day or two from prefabricated sections. Houses of that age may still have rubber-insulated wiring in places, which should be replaced rather than extended, and their boards often have little spare space. Upper Hutt's suburbs from the 1950s to the 1980s and Stokes Valley's Holborn subdivision from the late 1960s are generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable, but many still have their original board. Wainuiomata has seen new townhouses go up since about 2020, and these come with modern boards. Petone also has 1960s Star Flats apartment blocks and an industrial area around Cornish Street, where we look after workshop and commercial circuits.

Solar Panels Hutt Valley FAQs

Is solar worth it in Wainuiomata, with the hills around the valley?

It can be, depending on where your house sits. Homes in the middle of the valley floor see more sky than those tucked against the hills. We check shading for your roof across the year before recommending anything.

Do you install solar in the Hutt Valley?

Yes. We cover the Hutt Valley and the rest of the Wellington region, with a written, fixed price before anything is ordered.

What are flexible export limits?

Since 11 May 2026 Wellington Electricity has asked solar owners to drop export to 5 kW when parts of the network are congested, using a price signal rather than a fixed cap. A battery or using more of your own power avoids the extra charge.
