A solar system has three parts: the panels, an inverter that converts their output for your home, and the connection to your switchboard and the network. The lines company has to approve the system before it connects. Wellington Electricity looks after Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, Electra looks after the Kāpiti Coast, and we prepare and lodge the application with whichever one serves your Hataitai address.

Hataitai's slopes: east-facing mornings and an exposed Evans Bay ridge

Hataitai spreads over the south-eastern flank of Mount Victoria and down a valley between the Town Belt and a ridge above Evans Bay. That geography gives many roofs good morning sun and an earlier afternoon shadow, because Mount Victoria itself sits to the west of much of the suburb. EECA's guidance is that east and west-facing arrays produce less than north-facing ones but can still suit, and for a household that uses power in the morning an east-weighted array can be a sensible fit.

Streets named after native trees are often lined with them, and established gardens on the slopes can shade lower roofs, so we check shading through the year before sizing anything. Up on the Evans Bay ridge the exposure changes: sites there take more wind and some sit close enough to the harbour for salt, so fixings and hardware are chosen to suit.

Many houses are early 20th century villas and bungalows renovated in stages, and the board may still have rewireable fuses. That needs sorting before an inverter can connect. Sloping sections often give a deep subfloor on the downhill side, which can ease the cable route, but getting panels up steep streets and onto roofs set high above the road takes planning, so we work out access on the site visit. Wellington Electricity approves the connection once the design is settled.

Local tip: If you are on a street below Mount Victoria, note what time the sun leaves the roof in winter, as that drives most of the sizing decision.

Solar Panels in Hataitai: Local Conditions

Homes in the eastern and southern suburbs face the full force of Cook Strait southerlies, and many coastal streets are within reach of salt spray. We choose mounting hardware and fixings for that exposure, and the flat Miramar basin often gives simpler roof access than the hills around it.

On hillside sections the slope itself can shade a roof in winter when the sun is low.

Homes in Hataitai

Hataitai's housing is largely early 20th century villas and bungalows, with later homes from the 1930s to the 1950s and some newer dwellings added in the 2000s. Houses from that era may still have rubber-insulated cable in parts, and boards with rewireable fuses and little or no RCD protection. Many have been renovated in stages, so the wiring can change from room to room. Sloping sections often give a deep subfloor on the downhill side, which can make running new cable easier. The Hataitai Village shops, mostly from the 1910s and 1920s, are on the District Plan heritage list.

Many Hataitai streets are named after native trees, including Hinau, Konini, Matai, Rata and Rewa Roads.

Solar Panels Hataitai FAQs

Is an east-facing Hataitai roof worth putting solar on?

It can be. East-facing panels produce less than north-facing ones but catch the morning, which suits households that use power early in the day. We model your roof and usage before recommending anything.

Who approves my connection?

Wellington Electricity for Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, and Electra for the Kāpiti Coast. We prepare and lodge the application for you.

What are flexible export limits?

Since 11 May 2026 Wellington Electricity has asked solar owners to drop export to 5 kW when parts of the network are congested, using a price signal rather than a fixed cap. A battery or using more of your own power avoids the extra charge.
