Hataitai was subdivided in 1901, when the Hataitai Land Company began selling hillside sections north of Waitoa Road. Building carried on from the early 20th century into the 1950s, helped by the tram tunnel in 1907 and the Mount Victoria Tunnel in 1931. The suburb spreads over the south-eastern flank of Mount Victoria and down a valley towards Evans Bay.
With most homes built between 1901 and the 1950s, older wiring and tired switchboards are common jobs here. The slopes add their own challenges, from long cable runs to garages to outdoor lighting on steps and paths. We plan each job on site and give you a fixed price first.
Common Home Types in Hataitai
Hataitai's housing is largely early 20th century villas and bungalows, with later homes from the 1930s to the 1950s and some newer dwellings added in the 2000s. Houses from that era may still have rubber-insulated cable in parts, and boards with rewireable fuses and little or no RCD protection. Many have been renovated in stages, so the wiring can change from room to room. Sloping sections often give a deep subfloor on the downhill side, which can make running new cable easier. The Hataitai Village shops, mostly from the 1910s and 1920s, are on the District Plan heritage list.
What Hataitai Conditions Mean for Your Wiring
Hataitai's streets climb steep slopes, and many houses sit well above or below the road, so cable to a garage or car deck can be long and steep. We keep routes clear of banks and retaining walls. The ridge along Evans Bay is exposed to wind, so outdoor and security lights need firm fixings and weatherproof fittings. Homes near the Evans Bay shoreline are close enough to the harbour to fall in the highest sea spray zone, where outdoor fittings corrode faster. Access with tools and materials can be tricky on the steepest streets, so we plan before arriving.

Electrician Hataitai FAQs
Can you light the path up to my Hataitai house?
Yes. Path and step lighting makes steep access much safer. We use outdoor-rated fittings, put the circuit on RCD protection and can add sensors or timers.
Does my 1920s Hataitai bungalow need rewiring?
It depends what has been done before. We inspect the ceiling, subfloor and board, then tell you whether a full rewire, a partial rewire or just a new switchboard is needed.
Can you work on the heritage shops in Hataitai Village?
Yes. Our commercial electricians handle repairs, lighting and test and tag for shops and offices, working around the building's character.
Do I need a CoC for new outdoor lights?
Yes, if new fixed wiring is installed. We issue a Certificate of Compliance for every job that needs one, and you should keep it with your house records.
