Hataitai spreads across the flank of Mount Victoria and down to Evans Bay, and many houses sit well above or below the road. That usually means the approach is the weak point: a long flight of steps or a sloping path that cannot be seen from inside. We place a camera at the top looking down the steps and, where there is a garage or car deck at road level, a second one there, linked back by a cable route that avoids banks and retaining walls.

Most homes here are early 20th century villas and bungalows renovated in stages. The ridge above Evans Bay is exposed, and shoreline homes may be within the top BRANZ sea spray band, which means weather-rated, corrosion-resistant housings on rigid mounts. For the Hataitai Village shops, which are on the District Plan heritage list, we keep external cameras small and run cable inside where we can, so the historic frontages are not cluttered.

Local tip: On a Hataitai section with long steps, a sensor light at the bottom gives the camera a clear colour picture of anyone coming up at night.
