Mt Victoria is one of Wellington's oldest suburbs. Its houses are mainly 19th-century wooden villas and cottages, with some bungalows and apartment blocks among them, set on the north-western slopes of the 196 metre Mount Victoria above the southern end of the city. Most are one to two and a half storeys, with shallow front yards and little room on the side.

Much of the housing was renovated from the 1970s on, and many houses show repeated alterations and additions. That history is written into the wiring. We test what is there, explain it in plain language and give you a fixed price for a rewire, a new switchboard or a targeted repair.

Common Home Types in Mt Victoria

Repeated renovations mean a Mt Victoria house can contain three or four generations of wiring. Original rubber-insulated cable may still feed some lights or sockets, while kitchens and bathrooms run on modern cable added later. Rubber insulation becomes brittle with age and should be replaced rather than extended. Boards are often small and full, with RCD protection on only some circuits, if any. On the ridges houses tend to be taller and narrower, while in hollows such as Brougham Street and Austin Street they sit lower and closer to the street, which affects how we reach ceilings and subfloors.

What Mt Victoria Conditions Mean for Your Wiring

Mt Victoria's sections are steep and tight, with minimal side yards and little on-site parking. That limits where outdoor lights and meter boxes can go, and it means a home EV charger is only practical where there is parking on the property. Access for ladders and gear can be tricky, so we plan the job before arriving. Houses on the exposed upper slopes take the full force of Wellington's wind, so exterior fittings need sound fixings and good seals. The Wellington City District Plan includes a Mt Victoria North Townscape Precinct, so check whether your house is in it before changing anything visible from the street.

Electrician Mt Victoria FAQs

How do I know if my villa has old rubber wiring?

You often cannot tell from the switches. Rubber-insulated cable tends to show up in the ceiling space or under the floor, and its insulation crumbles when disturbed. We inspect the installation and show you photos of anything that needs replacing.

Can you rewire a house with very little access around it?

Yes. Most Mt Victoria houses have a subfloor and ceiling space, and we work from inside where possible. We plan where gear and vehicles go in advance so the job does not block the street for long.

Is it worth upgrading the switchboard at the same time as a rewire?

Usually. A new board gives the new circuits full RCD protection and spare space for future loads. Doing both together also avoids paying twice for the inspection and certification.

Do you work in Mt Victoria apartment blocks?

Yes. We handle faults, new circuits and lighting inside units, and work with the body corporate on anything that touches shared parts of the building.
