A solar system has three parts: the panels, an inverter that converts their output for your home, and the connection to your switchboard and the network. The lines company has to approve the system before it connects. Wellington Electricity looks after Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, Electra looks after the Kāpiti Coast, and we prepare and lodge the application with whichever one serves your Mt Victoria address.
Panels on Mt Victoria's ridges and hollows
Mt Victoria's 19th century villas and cottages climb the north-western slopes of a 196 metre hill, and where a house sits on that slope changes the solar picture a lot. On the ridges, houses are taller and set further back, with roofs that catch wind and sun alike. In hollows such as Brougham Street and Austin Street, homes are lower and closer to the street, and the houses uphill can block the sun for part of the day, particularly in winter. We check each roof plane against its neighbours rather than assuming a north face will perform.
The District Plan also has a Mt Victoria North Townscape Precinct. Panels on a street-facing roof inside it may need checking against the precinct rules, so we confirm that before design rather than after the brackets are on order.
Many houses here have been altered again and again since the 1970s, and the switchboard is often small and full. An inverter needs space and protection at the board, so we look inside it on the first visit. Access is the practical challenge: shallow front yards, minimal side yards and little on-site parking mean scaffolding and panel delivery need planning, and on the steepest streets we schedule around footpath space. Upper slopes take the full wind, so the fixing design follows the confirmed wind zone, with an engineer where it is above High.
Local tip: If your house is in a hollow, a few photos of the roof on a winter morning and afternoon show us how much the houses uphill shade it.
Solar Panels in Mt Victoria: Local Conditions
Central Wellington villas and cottages often have corrugated iron roofs that take panels well, but tight hillside sections in Thorndon, Mt Victoria and Brooklyn can be shaded by the hill or the house next door. We map shading through the day before deciding where panels go.
On hillside sections the slope itself can shade a roof in winter when the sun is low.
Homes in Mt Victoria
Repeated renovations mean a Mt Victoria house can contain three or four generations of wiring. Original rubber-insulated cable may still feed some lights or sockets, while kitchens and bathrooms run on modern cable added later. Rubber insulation becomes brittle with age and should be replaced rather than extended. Boards are often small and full, with RCD protection on only some circuits, if any. On the ridges houses tend to be taller and narrower, while in hollows such as Brougham Street and Austin Street they sit lower and closer to the street, which affects how we reach ceilings and subfloors.
Mt Victoria was for a long time one of Wellington's sources of fresh milk from its dairy farms.

How We Handle Solar Panels in Mt Victoria
On install day the panels go on the roof, the inverter goes in a suitable spot and everything is connected to your switchboard. Roof penetrations are sealed and cables are run neatly.
Pricing: a free quote and a fixed price agreed before we start. You get a written, itemised quote, and small jobs can be quoted from photos.

Solar Panels Mt Victoria FAQs
Is my Mt Victoria house in a precinct that affects solar panels?
Some houses are inside the Mt Victoria North Townscape Precinct in the District Plan. If yours is, the rules need checking before panels go on a roof visible from the street, and we do that before finalising a design.
Who approves my connection?
Wellington Electricity for Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, and Electra for the Kāpiti Coast. We prepare and lodge the application for you.
What are flexible export limits?
Since 11 May 2026 Wellington Electricity has asked solar owners to drop export to 5 kW when parts of the network are congested, using a price signal rather than a fixed cap. A battery or using more of your own power avoids the extra charge.
