Ngaio sits on the slopes of Mount Kaukau about 3.5 km north of the city, with the Korimako Stream running through it. Its homes are a real mix: colonial buildings from the 1860s, railway cottages and bungalows from the 1920s and 1930s, and 1960s weatherboard houses. The Tarikaka Settlement of railway cottages, built in 1928, is now a heritage area.
With housing that varied, no two Ngaio jobs are quite the same. Older cottages and bungalows often need rewiring or a new switchboard, while 1960s homes usually need a board upgrade before new loads go in. We test first and give you a written price.
Common Home Types in Ngaio
Ngaio's 1920s and 1930s railway cottages and bungalows may still have rubber-insulated cable and early boards with rewireable fuses. Houses in the Tarikaka Settlement heritage area need care with anything visible from outside. The 1960s weatherboard homes are generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable, but many keep their original board with little RCD protection. Chew Cottage, built in the 1860s from local tōtara, rimu and kauri, shows how long some Ngaio buildings have stood, and older timber houses usually have the subfloor and ceiling access that makes rewiring practical.
What Ngaio Conditions Mean for Your Wiring
Ngaio is hilly and green, with mature trees and steep sections, so cable runs to garages and outbuildings often cross slopes. In July 2017 heavy rain brought down a landslide that covered Ngaio Gorge Road, the main link to the city, and slips can damage outdoor wiring too, so we keep trenches and outdoor circuits away from unstable banks. Ngaio is served by two stations on the Johnsonville line, and many homes sit above or below the road with limited off-street parking.

Electrician Ngaio FAQs
Does my Tarikaka Street railway cottage need rewiring?
It might. Cottages from 1928 that have not been fully rewired can still have rubber-insulated cable. We inspect the house and tell you what needs replacing, with care for its heritage character.
Can I add a heat pump circuit to my 1960s Ngaio home?
Usually. We check the board for space and capacity first. If it is full or has no RCD protection, we may recommend an upgrade at the same time.
Can you run power to a garage below my Ngaio house?
Yes. We plan the route on site, keep the cable clear of banks, size it for the distance and protect the circuit with an RCD. You get a Certificate of Compliance when the work is done.
Do you do pre-purchase electrical inspections in Ngaio?
Yes. We check the board, wiring, earthing and RCD protection and give you a written report with photos.
