How often to retest depends on how hard the gear is used. A drill on a building site or a grinder in a workshop takes far more punishment than a monitor in an office. We agree sensible intervals with you, based on the standard for in-service testing, and book the next visit so it does not get forgotten.
Ngaio halls, heritage cottages and hillside workshops: how test and tag works here
Ngaio is a small, green suburb on the slopes of Mt Kaukau, and its shared spaces are the main source of test and tag work. The town hall is hired by community groups, exercise classes and families, and the library, schools and churches each have their own kitchen and AV gear. Many Ngaio homes are also rented, including some of the 1928 railway cottages in the Tarikaka Settlement heritage area.
Community halls are a test and tag puzzle because so many people use the same appliances. An urn or microwave might be plugged in by a dozen different groups in a week, and nobody owns the job of checking the cord. We test the hall's own gear, list it by room, and suggest a short visual checklist the hall committee can pin up by the kitchen. Where hirers bring in their own equipment, the committee can ask for current tags as a hire condition.
For landlords of older Ngaio cottages, the board may have RCDs on only a few circuits, if any. Under regulation 26, a current tag is enough for supplied appliances to count as safe, so tagging heaters, dryers and kitchen gear is often the simplest route. Ngaio's steep sections and limited off-street parking mean we confirm access first. Home workshops in garages under the house are common here too, and power tools used there are tested and tagged in the same visit.
Local tip: Ngaio hall committees can ask regular hirers to tag their own appliances, and keep a copy of those tags with the hall register.

Homes in Ngaio
Ngaio's 1920s and 1930s railway cottages and bungalows may still have rubber-insulated cable and early boards with rewireable fuses. Houses in the Tarikaka Settlement heritage area need care with anything visible from outside. The 1960s weatherboard homes are generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable, but many keep their original board with little RCD protection. Chew Cottage, built in the 1860s from local tōtara, rimu and kauri, shows how long some Ngaio buildings have stood, and older timber houses usually have the subfloor and ceiling access that makes rewiring practical.
Ngaio was part of the Onslow Borough until it joined Wellington City in 1919.
Our electricians are in and around Ngaio Town Hall and Chew Cottage and the rest of Ngaio most weeks. For everything else, see electricians in Ngaio.

Test and Tag Ngaio FAQs
Who is responsible for testing appliances in the Ngaio town hall?
Whoever manages the hall should keep its own appliances safe. Test and tag is the common way to show that. Equipment brought in by hirers is their responsibility, and hire conditions can require current tags.
Will we get a record?
Yes. A register lists every item, its location, the result and the next test date.
What gets tested?
Anything that plugs in: kettles, microwaves, heaters, computers, chargers, tools, leads and power boards. Fixed wiring is not part of test and tag.
