Batteries store daytime solar for the evening, when most homes use the most power. They add cost, but in the Wellington Electricity area they also help with flexible export limits, because using or storing more of your own power means less is pushed onto a congested network. We explain whether a battery is worth it for you, or design a battery-ready system so one can be added later.

Ngaio's railway cottages, heritage streets and tall trees

Ngaio climbs the slopes of Mount Kaukau, and its homes span 1860s colonial buildings, 1920s and 1930s railway cottages and bungalows, and 1960s weatherboard houses. The Tarikaka Settlement of former railway cottages is a heritage area, so for those homes anything visible from outside, panels included, needs care and a check of the rules before design. Small cottage roofs also limit how many panels fit, which points toward a compact system sized to daytime use.

Mature trees are part of Ngaio's character, and the Korimako Stream valley and the Mount Kaukau slopes put many roofs in shade early or late in the day. Shade on a single panel can drag down a whole string, so we map it before choosing a layout and may recommend leaving a shaded plane bare. Roofs higher on the slope, clear of the canopy, can produce well.

The 1960s homes are generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable but often keep their original board with little RCD protection, so it may need work to take an inverter. Getting gear onto houses above or below the road takes planning, and the 2017 landslide that buried Ngaio Gorge Road is a reminder that steep banks need respect when we route any cable outside. With two stations on the Johnsonville line, many residents commute, so we look at whether a battery or timed hot water would lift daytime self-use.

Local tip: If you live in the Tarikaka Settlement, check the heritage rules for your street with the council before we finalise a layout.

Solar Panels in Ngaio: Local Conditions

In the western and northern suburbs, hillside sections in Karori, Ngaio and Khandallah can lose morning or afternoon sun to the slope and to mature trees, while newer homes in Churton Park and Johnsonville often have clear roofs. We check each site's shading before quoting.

Shade from large trees can cut output a lot, even if it only falls for part of the day.

Homes in Ngaio

Ngaio's 1920s and 1930s railway cottages and bungalows may still have rubber-insulated cable and early boards with rewireable fuses. Houses in the Tarikaka Settlement heritage area need care with anything visible from outside. The 1960s weatherboard homes are generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable, but many keep their original board with little RCD protection. Chew Cottage, built in the 1860s from local tōtara, rimu and kauri, shows how long some Ngaio buildings have stood, and older timber houses usually have the subfloor and ceiling access that makes rewiring practical.

All Saints Church, built in 1928, was closed in 2011 after engineers found it a serious earthquake risk following the Christchurch earthquake.

From Mt Kaukau and Tarikaka Settlement to the quieter streets, we work right across Ngaio. For everything else, see electricians in Ngaio.

Solar Panels Ngaio FAQs

Can I put solar on a house in the Tarikaka Settlement?

Possibly, but it is a heritage area, so anything visible from outside needs checking against the rules first. A rear roof plane may be the better option, and we confirm this before design.

What are flexible export limits?

Since 11 May 2026 Wellington Electricity has asked solar owners to drop export to 5 kW when parts of the network are congested, using a price signal rather than a fixed cap. A battery or using more of your own power avoids the extra charge.

Who approves my connection?

Wellington Electricity for Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, and Electra for the Kāpiti Coast. We prepare and lodge the application for you.
