Cameras should protect your place without filming more of your neighbours than they need to. We aim each one at your doors, driveway, yard or shopfront, and talk you through the Privacy Commissioner's guidance on telling people they are being recorded. For businesses we can add signage and set recording to suit your hours.

Island Bay security cameras, from The Parade to the slopes above the beach

Island Bay looks straight out at Cook Strait, and its weather arrives with little warning. Homes near the beach are likely to sit in the highest sea spray zone, so we specify coastal-rated cameras, corrosion-resistant brackets and sealed connectors, and check any existing outdoor fittings for rust before we reuse a mounting point. Southerly storms drive rain sideways, so cameras face away from the weather where they can and every cable entry gets a drip loop.

Much of the housing is 1920s bungalows that have been renovated more than once. Most have a subfloor and ceiling space, which makes wired cameras practical: the cable can travel inside the house to a recorder in a hall cupboard or wardrobe. Further back from the beach, houses climb the surrounding slopes, and a camera for a garage or shed down the hill may need a long, steep cable run that we plan on the first visit. On the flat streets near the beach, a narrower lens on the front door keeps footage on your own porch instead of the footpath and the house next door.

The 1920s shops along The Parade are another regular job. For a shop or café, we cover the door, the counter and the rear access, and set recording to suit trading hours. Older commercial buildings here have needed earthquake work, so we confirm what is behind a wall or ceiling before drilling through it.

Local tip: If your Island Bay house faces the beach, ask for cameras with a coastal-rated housing even if they will sit under the eaves.

CCTV Installation in Island Bay: Local Conditions

The eastern and southern suburbs face strong southerlies and salt spray along Lyall Bay, Island Bay and Seatoun, so we use camera housings and mounts suited to the outdoors and fix them firmly to stop the picture shaking in a gale. Flat sections in Miramar and Kilbirnie are often simpler to cable.

Near the sea, salt corrodes cheap brackets and connectors.

Homes in Island Bay

Island Bay is full of 1920s houses, including bungalows that have been renovated more than once. Homes of that age may still have rubber-insulated cable in parts, along with boards that have rewireable fuses and no RCD protection. Renovations often added kitchens and bathrooms on newer cable while leaving the original circuits in place. Most houses have a subfloor and ceiling space we can work in. The 1920s shops along The Parade also need regular maintenance, lighting work and test and tag.

Island Bay is about 5 km south of the city centre on a small bay off Cook Strait, where Tapu Te Ranga Island, about 500 metres offshore, forms a natural breakwater.

From Erskine College and Chapel and The Parade to the quieter streets, we work right across Island Bay. For everything else, see electricians in Island Bay.

CCTV Installation Island Bay FAQs

Will salt air damage my Island Bay security cameras?

It can if standard fittings are used. We fit coastal-rated cameras, stainless brackets and sealed connectors, which hold up much better in the salt spray close to the beach.

Can I watch my cameras on my phone?

Yes. We set up the recorder and app so you can see live and recorded footage from anywhere with a data connection.

Are wired or wifi cameras better?

Wired cameras are usually more reliable because power and data run down one cable and there is no battery or signal to worry about. Wifi cameras suit places where cabling is impractical, as long as the signal is strong.
