Induction is a common upgrade, but plenty of older kitchens in Island Bay were wired for a smaller range. Before connecting a new hob we compare the manufacturer's requirements with your existing circuit and switchboard. If the cable or protection falls short, we say so and price the upgrade before anything is fitted.

Island Bay 1920s bungalows: new kitchens, old range cables

Island Bay grew quickly in the 1920s, and many of its bungalows have been renovated more than once since. The pattern we see is new kitchens and bathrooms on newer cable while original circuits stay in place elsewhere. Sometimes the range circuit was replaced in a renovation and sometimes it was not, so we check rather than assume before a new cooktop or wall oven goes in.

Most Island Bay bungalows have room to work underneath and in the roof space, so a new dedicated induction circuit can usually be run with little disruption. The constraint is more often the board: early fuse boards with no RCD protection leave nowhere to put a modern breaker. In that case we price the board upgrade and the new circuit together. Houses that climb the slopes away from the beach can put more distance between the board and the kitchen, which we measure on site.

Near the beach, salt air off Cook Strait corrodes outdoor meter boxes and boards over time, so we check the connections that will carry the new load. The shops along The Parade, many from the 1920s, have kitchens and staff rooms with their own ovens, and we connect those too. Island Bay is on Powerco's gas network, so we also handle the electrical side when a gas hob is replaced, with your gasfitter capping the gas.

Local tip: If your Island Bay kitchen has been renovated, look for paperwork from the electrician who did it, as a Certificate of Compliance can show whether the range circuit was replaced.

Oven and Cooktop Installation in Island Bay: Local Conditions

In the eastern and southern suburbs many homes have kitchens renovated more than once, so the range circuit can be older than the cabinetry around it. We check the cable all the way back to the board before connecting induction.

Kitchen appliances are indoors, but in beachside homes we check the switchboard for corrosion while we are there.

Homes in Island Bay

Island Bay is full of 1920s houses, including bungalows that have been renovated more than once. Homes of that age may still have rubber-insulated cable in parts, along with boards that have rewireable fuses and no RCD protection. Renovations often added kitchens and bathrooms on newer cable while leaving the original circuits in place. Most houses have a subfloor and ceiling space we can work in. The 1920s shops along The Parade also need regular maintenance, lighting work and test and tag.

St Hilda's Anglican Church, built in 1911, had its brickwork removed and replaced with timber framing to deal with earthquake vulnerability, reopening in 2022.

Oven and Cooktop Installation Island Bay FAQs

How do I know if my renovated Island Bay kitchen still has its original range circuit?

Check for a Certificate of Compliance from the renovation. If there is none, we trace the cable from the cooktop back to the board and tell you its age and size.

How long does an install take in Island Bay?

A like-for-like swap is often a few hours. Jobs needing a new circuit or switchboard work take longer, and the quote includes a timeframe.

Can you remove the old appliance?

We disconnect it safely. Tell us when booking if you also need it taken away.
