The Island Bay part of George Hunter's estate was subdivided and auctioned in 1879, and the tram arrived in 1905. Many houses and shops date from a period of rapid development in the 1920s. The suburb sits about 5 km south of the city centre on a small bay off Cook Strait, sheltered by Tapu Te Ranga Island about 500 metres offshore.
A century on, many Island Bay homes are due for a wiring check, and those near The Parade and the beach take a lot of salt and wind. We rewire, upgrade switchboards, fit coastal-rated outdoor lighting and trace faults, with a fixed price before we start.
Common Home Types in Island Bay
Island Bay is full of 1920s houses, including bungalows that have been renovated more than once. Homes of that age may still have rubber-insulated cable in parts, along with boards that have rewireable fuses and no RCD protection. Renovations often added kitchens and bathrooms on newer cable while leaving the original circuits in place. Most houses have a subfloor and ceiling space we can work in. The 1920s shops along The Parade also need regular maintenance, lighting work and test and tag.
What Island Bay Conditions Mean for Your Wiring
Island Bay faces Cook Strait, and homes close to the beach are likely to be in the highest sea spray zone that BRANZ applies within 500 metres of the sea. Confirm your address on BRANZ Maps. Salt corrodes outdoor sockets, security lights and meter boxes, so we fit coastal-rated gear and check existing fittings for damage. Southerly storms bring wind-driven rain, so exterior fittings need good seals. Away from the beach, houses climb the surrounding slopes, where cable runs to garages and sheds can be steep. St Hilda's Church, which reopened in 2022 after its brickwork was replaced with timber framing, is a reminder that older buildings here have needed earthquake work.

Electrician Island Bay FAQs
Should I rewire my 1920s Island Bay house before renovating?
It is usually worth testing first. If the house still has rubber-insulated cable, replacing it during a renovation is far easier than after new linings go up. We inspect and tell you exactly what needs doing.
Why are my outdoor sockets near the beach corroded?
Salt spray settles in sheltered spots and eats into metal parts. Coastal-rated sockets with sealed covers last much longer. We can replace corroded fittings and check the circuits behind them.
Can you upgrade the board in an Island Bay shop?
Yes. We handle switchboard upgrades, lighting and maintenance for shops along The Parade, and we can work outside trading hours.
Do I get a Certificate of Compliance for a rewire?
Yes. Every rewire comes with a Certificate of Compliance, and if a new main switchboard is fitted it is also checked by a licensed electrical inspector.
