Lyall Bay began as the township of Maranui in 1896 and grew quickly once the tram reached the beach in 1909. Most early houses went up on the western side, because the eastern side was sand dunes until the council levelled them and capped them with clay from 1925, and the 1939 Centennial Exhibition site later became housing too.

Working in Lyall Bay
Drifting sand regularly blocked the tram line, so the council built the 'whirler' sea wall in 1932 to blow sand back onto the beach, and a further sea wall east of Onepu Road in 1975.
About a third of the bay was reclaimed for Wellington Airport, which opened in 1959.
