A current register shows you are managing the electrical risk from equipment at work, and head contractors, landlords and insurers may ask for it. Ours lists each item, where it lives, the result and the next test date, ready to file or pass on.
Lyall Bay: testing beach cafés, surf clubs and gear that lives in salt and sand
Lyall Bay has two surf lifesaving clubs, a strip of cafés along the beach, and businesses linked to the airport, which took over about a third of the bay through reclamation. Almost all of it sits close enough to the water to be affected by salt spray, and the bay's sand has been blowing around for so long that the council built a sea wall in 1932 to push it back onto the beach.
Salt and sand are what make testing here different. Sand works its way into power boards, switch slides and plug tops, and salt left on pins turns into corrosion that raises resistance and can heat up under load. A lead that looks fine from a metre away can fail at the inspection stage once we open the plug. Surf clubs have extra risk because wetsuits, radios, chargers, kettles and heaters all share the same damp rooms.
We usually recommend a shorter retest interval for any gear used outdoors or near the clubhouse doors, and a check by staff between tests for sand and green deposits on pins. Indoor office and café counter equipment can follow a more usual cycle. Clubs often test before the patrol season starts, and cafés prefer the quiet early hours, which we can work around. Anything that fails can usually be repaired with a new plug or cord on the day by our electricians.
Local tip: At a Lyall Bay surf club, wipe salt off charger plugs and power board pins with a dry cloth after each session, and keep boards off the floor.
Test and Tag in Lyall Bay: Local Conditions
In the eastern and southern suburbs we test in shops and cafés in Kilbirnie and Miramar, businesses near the airport and production and workshop spaces around Miramar. Larger sites are done in stages to keep work moving.
Equipment used outdoors near the sea, such as cleaning gear and outdoor heaters, wears faster in salt air.
Homes in Lyall Bay
Lyall Bay's housing spans from the early 1900s through the post-war years, with older homes on the western side and later ones on the former dune land. Older houses can still have rubber-insulated cable and boards with no RCD protection, while homes extended over the years often have boards with no spare space. Many homes have garages or off-street parking, which helps when adding an EV charger, provided the board has capacity for a dedicated circuit.
Drifting sand regularly blocked the tram line, so the council built the 'whirler' sea wall in 1932 to blow sand back onto the beach, and a further sea wall east of Onepu Road in 1975.
From Surfers Corner and Te Raekaihau Point to the quieter streets, we work right across Lyall Bay. For everything else, see electricians in Lyall Bay.

Test and Tag Lyall Bay FAQs
Why do our Lyall Bay leads keep failing test and tag?
Usually because of salt and sand. Corrosion on pins and sand inside plug tops are common failures near the beach. Storing leads indoors, off the floor and loosely coiled helps them last.
What happens to items that fail?
They are taken out of use, labelled as failed and listed in the register. We can replace plugs and leads, or you can replace the item.
Can you test after hours?
Yes. We can test before opening, after hours or at weekends so your team is not interrupted.
