A solar system has three parts: the panels, an inverter that converts their output for your home, and the connection to your switchboard and the network. The lines company has to approve the system before it connects. Wellington Electricity looks after Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, Electra looks after the Kāpiti Coast, and we prepare and lodge the application with whichever one serves your Raumati address.
Raumati beach houses, erosion risk and solar
Raumati Beach was laid out as a seaside resort in 1908, and older beach houses and baches still sit among newer commuter homes. The two need different starting points. Older baches may have tired roofing and small boards with rewireable fuses, so the roof and board are checked before any panels are priced. Newer homes generally have modern boards ready for solar once capacity is confirmed. Flat sections on the dunes mean shade usually comes from hedges and neighbouring houses rather than hills.
The council ranks Raumati as the most vulnerable area on the Kāpiti Coast by number of private properties at risk from erosion, and a storm in 1976 took up to 15 metres of the coastline. A replacement seawall is scheduled to begin in 2026/27. For a beachfront home, that is worth weighing alongside the payback period before investing in a long-life system. Homes further back from the beach have less exposure and are simpler to plan for.
On the beachfront, expect the most severe sea spray rating, which means corrosion-resistant frames and fasteners and the odd hose-down of the glass. The Kāpiti Coast is less windy than Wellington, which helps with fixings. Electra runs the lines network here, and its approval comes before the system is connected. Inland streets towards Queen Elizabeth Park are further from the spray, which widens the choice of hardware.
Local tip: Ask us to show the payback period alongside the system price, which is a useful number to weigh for a beachfront Raumati home.
Solar Panels in Raumati: Local Conditions
The Kāpiti Coast is noticeably less windy than Wellington: NIWA records Paraparaumu Airport with far fewer days of strong gusts than Wellington Airport. Electra is the lines company here and handles applications in two tiers, 10 kW or less and above 10 kW.
Near the sea, frames, rails and fixings need to suit salt exposure.
Homes in Raumati
Raumati's older beach houses and baches may have small boards with rewireable fuses, wiring extended over the years and no RCD protection on some circuits. Newer commuter homes generally have modern boards ready for extras like EV chargers and solar, once capacity is checked. Any new or altered circuit needs RCD protection, so renovating an older beach house is a good time to upgrade the board.
The council has scheduled construction of a replacement Raumati seawall to begin in 2026/27, starting with priority areas.

Solar Panels Raumati FAQs
Should I install solar on a beachfront Raumati home?
It can still make sense, but weigh the erosion risk the council has identified and the salt exposure. We specify marine-rated hardware and give you a payback estimate so you can decide.
Who approves my connection?
Wellington Electricity for Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, and Electra for the Kāpiti Coast. We prepare and lodge the application for you.
What are flexible export limits?
Since 11 May 2026 Wellington Electricity has asked solar owners to drop export to 5 kW when parts of the network are congested, using a price signal rather than a fixed cap. A battery or using more of your own power avoids the extra charge.
