A solar system has three parts: the panels, an inverter that converts their output for your home, and the connection to your switchboard and the network. The lines company has to approve the system before it connects. Wellington Electricity looks after Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, Electra looks after the Kāpiti Coast, and we prepare and lodge the application with whichever one serves your Paremata address.

Paremata and Papakōwhai: harbour edge versus hillside

Paremata sits at the entrance to the Pāuatahanui Inlet, where the 1936 road bridge opened the area to commuters. Homes on the flat near the Ngatitoa Domain and the harbour edge probably fall inside the BRANZ top sea spray zone, which covers land within 500 metres of a harbour, so we specify marine-grade mounting hardware there. Older homes from the decades after the bridge often have boards with little RCD protection, and these may need upgrading before an inverter connects.

Papakōwhai, on the hills to the south, is newer and quite different. Roofs are often larger and less shaded, boards are modern, and adding an inverter, a battery or an EV charger is usually simpler. The slopes do bring steeper access and more wind, so the wind zone and the safe route for getting panels onto the roof are part of the site visit. Shade from established gardens is less common on these newer sections.

Homes in between, generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable but still on their original board, sit somewhere between the two. Commuters who are out all day may get more from a smaller array, or a battery that carries daytime output into the evening. Wherever you are, Wellington Electricity approves the connection, and with its flexible export limits a system sized for your own daytime use is usually the better design.

Local tip: If you are near the water in Paremata, check your address on BRANZ Maps so we know which hardware grade to price.

Solar Panels in Paremata: Local Conditions

Porirua homes range from state houses with simple gable roofs to 1970s houses in Whitby on sloping, harbour-facing sites. Sites near the water need fixings suited to salt air, and Wellington Electricity handles the grid application.

On hillside sections the slope itself can shade a roof in winter when the sun is low.

Homes in Paremata

Older Paremata homes from the decades after the 1936 bridge may still have early wiring and boards with little or no RCD protection, often extended over the years. Papakōwhai's newer homes on the hills generally have modern boards, which makes adding EV chargers and other circuits simpler if there is capacity. Homes in between are generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable but may still run their original board.

Paremata, as part of Porirua, is usually supplied from the Te Mārua treatment plant, which takes Hutt River water at the Kaitoke Weir.

How We Handle Solar Panels in Paremata

On install day the panels go on the roof, the inverter goes in a suitable spot and everything is connected to your switchboard. Roof penetrations are sealed and cables are run neatly.

Solar Panels Paremata FAQs

Is solar easier to install in Papakōwhai than in older Paremata?

Often, because Papakōwhai's newer homes have modern boards and larger roofs. Hillside access and wind still need planning, which we cover on the site visit.

Do you install solar in Paremata?

Yes. We cover Paremata and the rest of the Wellington region, with a written, fixed price before anything is ordered.

How much maintenance do panels need?

Very little. Rain does much of the cleaning, but panels near the sea can collect salt, and a check of output now and then is worthwhile. We also offer system health checks.
