Paremata grew as a seaside suburb once a road bridge spanned the entrance to the Pāuatahanui Inlet in 1936, easing access to Wellington. By the early 2000s the area around the Ngatitoa Domain had become a busy suburb and fishing base, and the newer suburb of Papakōwhai has grown on the hills to the south.
Paremata homes range from older harbourside houses to modern hillside builds, so the electrical work varies widely. We upgrade boards, add EV chargers, fit coastal-rated outdoor lighting and handle repairs, with a written price first.
Common Home Types in Paremata
Older Paremata homes from the decades after the 1936 bridge may still have early wiring and boards with little or no RCD protection, often extended over the years. Papakōwhai's newer homes on the hills generally have modern boards, which makes adding EV chargers and other circuits simpler if there is capacity. Homes in between are generally wired in plastic-sheathed cable but may still run their original board.
What Paremata Conditions Mean for Your Wiring
Paremata sits at the harbour entrance, and BRANZ puts land within 500 metres of a harbour in the highest sea spray zone, so many homes here are likely to be in it. Salt corrodes outdoor sockets, lights and meter boxes, so we use coastal-rated gear. A 2009 Greater Wellington survey found nearby Plimmerton Beach and Karehana Bay eroding while the harbour inlets fill with sediment. Papakōwhai's hillside sections bring steep cable runs to garages and decks that need careful planning. Wellington Electricity runs the lines network here.

Working in Paremata
Paremata, as part of Porirua, is usually supplied from the Te Mārua treatment plant, which takes Hutt River water at the Kaitoke Weir.
The suburb takes its name from the stone Paremata Barracks, built on the north shore of Porirua Harbour around 1846 and largely destroyed by the 1848 Marlborough earthquake.
From Paremata railway station and Ngatitoa Domain to the quieter streets, we work right across Paremata.
Electrician Paremata FAQs
Can I add an EV charger to my Papakōwhai home?
Usually. Newer homes often have board capacity. WorkSafe guidance calls for a dedicated circuit with the right RCD protection, and we check everything on site first.
Why do outdoor fittings near the inlet corrode?
Salt spray from the harbour settles in sheltered spots. Coastal-rated fittings and a regular rinse help them last.
Does my older Paremata home need a switchboard upgrade?
It depends on the board. We test it, look for missing RCDs and lack of space, and tell you honestly if it can stay.
Can you light a steep driveway or deck?
Yes. We install outdoor-rated lighting on RCD-protected circuits, with sensors or timers if you like.
