Batteries store daytime solar for the evening, when most homes use the most power. They add cost, but in the Wellington Electricity area they also help with flexible export limits, because using or storing more of your own power means less is pushed onto a congested network. We explain whether a battery is worth it for you, or design a battery-ready system so one can be added later.
Porirua East, Cannons Creek and the city centre: where solar fits
More than 2,700 state houses were built in Porirua East and Cannons Creek on rolling hills east of the motorway, and their simple roofs often suit a modest array. Slope is the variable. North-facing streets on those hills can do well, while homes on the shaded side of a hill may not, so we check each roof's aspect rather than assume. Many of these houses were extended without a board upgrade, leaving little room for the inverter's connection. Steep driveways and banks also decide where scaffold can stand, so we plan that before install day.
Around the city centre, industrial and commercial buildings with large roofs and daytime loads are often stronger candidates than houses, because self-consumed power is worth more than exported power. The centre sits beside the Porirua Stream, which is managed for flood risk, so inverters and batteries are mounted well above ground level. Warehouses and workshops there may also run on three-phase supply, which the inverter has to suit.
Many older homes are rentals, which makes solar a landlord decision, and the return depends on tenants' daytime use. Newer private homes have modern boards and are easier to connect. Wellington Electricity runs the lines network and approves the connection, and since May 2026 it may ask owners to cut export to 5 kW at congested times, so a system sized for self-use rather than export is the safer design.
Local tip: If your Porirua house sits on the south side of a hill, ask us for a quick shade check before getting a full design.
Solar Panels in Porirua: Local Conditions
Porirua homes range from state houses with simple gable roofs to 1970s houses in Whitby on sloping, harbour-facing sites. Sites near the water need fixings suited to salt air, and Wellington Electricity handles the grid application.
Homes with workshops or home businesses often use a lot of power during the day, which is when panels generate.
Homes in Porirua
Porirua's state houses from 1949 onwards may still have rubber-insulated cable in places and boards with rewireable fuses and no RCD protection. Many have been extended over the years without a board upgrade, leaving little space for new circuits. As the city has grown, newer private homes have been built, generally with modern boards. Many older homes are rentals, where landlords need long-life photoelectric or hard-wired smoke alarms within 3 metres of each bedroom door.
Harbour reclamation from 1960 straightened the railway from Porirua to Papakōwhai, and further reclamation from the late 1960s made room for a four-lane expressway beside it.

Solar Panels Porirua FAQs
Does solar make sense for a Cannons Creek state house?
It can, if the roof faces north, east or west and gets clear sun. Older boards may need upgrading first. We check the roof, the board and your usage before quoting.
What are flexible export limits?
Since 11 May 2026 Wellington Electricity has asked solar owners to drop export to 5 kW when parts of the network are congested, using a price signal rather than a fixed cap. A battery or using more of your own power avoids the extra charge.
Who approves my connection?
Wellington Electricity for Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, and Electra for the Kāpiti Coast. We prepare and lodge the application for you.
