How often to retest depends on how hard the gear is used. A drill on a building site or a grinder in a workshop takes far more punishment than a monitor in an office. We agree sensible intervals with you, based on the standard for in-service testing, and book the next visit so it does not get forgotten.
Bars, venues and converted warehouses: test and tag in Te Aro
Te Aro is where Wellington goes out, and most of our testing here is for hospitality. Bars, restaurants, theatres and live venues line Cuba Street and Courtenay Place, and a typical site has a commercial kitchen, a coffee machine, a back bar full of fridges and glass washers, and a stage or DJ area with lighting and sound leads. That gear runs late, gets wet and gets moved around, so it rarely suits the longer intervals an office can use.
Many of these businesses trade from former market warehouses and office buildings that have been converted more than once. Wall outlets are often in the wrong places for the current layout, which means double adaptors, piggyback plugs and power boards strung behind fridges. We test every one of those boards and leads, and we point out any that are overloaded or running through a doorway where they will be crushed. Where a permanent fix makes more sense, our electricians can quote for extra outlets on the same visit.
Te Aro also has a large stock of apartments, and their shared lounges, gyms and laundries often hold appliances owned by the body corporate. Those can go on a single register for the building, separate from what owners and tenants keep in their own units. For bars and venues we usually test in the morning, before deliveries and prep start, so service is never interrupted.
Local tip: Before test day, pull the power boards out from behind your Te Aro bar fridges so we can inspect them without moving heavy equipment.
Test and Tag in Te Aro: Local Conditions
Central Wellington testing is mostly offices, shops, cafés and hospitality venues in multi-storey buildings, where we work floor by floor around your staff. Building access, lifts and parking are sorted before the day.
Equipment used outdoors in exposed, windy spots gets knocked about and rained on.
Homes in Te Aro
Most Te Aro homes are apartments, and many sit in buildings that started life as offices or warehouses. Each unit usually has its own distribution board fed from a main board in a shared plant area, so some faults are inside the unit and others belong to the building. Work on common property, such as risers, car parks and main boards, needs body corporate approval. Converted buildings can contain wiring from several eras, and rooftop additions bring their own new supply. Older cottages and small terraces remain in pockets, and these may still have rubber-insulated cable that should be replaced rather than extended.
Te Aro covers the mostly flat southern part of the central city, between The Terrace to the west and Cambridge Terrace at the base of Mount Victoria.

Test and Tag Te Aro FAQs
Can you test the lighting and sound leads in our Cuba Street venue?
Yes. Portable stage lighting, sound gear on flexible cords, extension reels and power boards are all within the scope of AS/NZS 3760, and we can test them around rehearsal or bump-in times.
Will we get a record?
Yes. A register lists every item, its location, the result and the next test date.
What gets tested?
Anything that plugs in: kettles, microwaves, heaters, computers, chargers, tools, leads and power boards. Fixed wiring is not part of test and tag.
